    Committee Impressed' with
The members of the Areas of Excellence Visitation
Committee for life Sciences said they are "generally
impressed with the progress of the school towards
excellence."
Hie School of Life Sciences is the fifth of six
Areas of Excellence chosen by UNL Chancellor James
Zumberge to be examined.
A committee makes periodic visits to assess
whether the school's goals will lead "toward
excellence," and to recommend modification' in
plans.
' Longterm improvement
Gary Hergenrader, Director of the School of Life
Sciences, said his department's goals include longterm
improvement, a change in core curriculum, a more
meaningful modern biology course, and establishing a
summer field station where students would live and
take field courses.

Already a summer field station has been planned
for this year, the school has organized an extensive
graduate program and is starting to use modern
equipment, including a new scanning electron
microscope, Hergenrader said.
Although the visitation committee's official report
will not be available for four weeks, the members said
they were impressed by the consolidation of several
departments into the School of Life Sciences and
were pleased with the progress of the school "towards
excellence."
Committee dismayed
Hergenrader said "the committee was dismayed,
but not surprised, at low faculty salaries. They were
surprised that the students were concerned about
loisng good faculty members because their salaries
weren't high enough."
The visitation committee in life sciences is chaired
by Richard Consigli, Kansas State University. Other

professional members are Phillip Humphrey,
University of Kansas, John Teague Self, University of
Oklahoma, and Frederick Smith, Iowa State
University. Earle Raune was the Governor's
representative; State Senator Herb Duis, Gothenburg,
represented the Legislature and Quentin Tonelli was
the student representative. ,
Hergenrader said he didn't think the School of
Life Sciences is an Area of Excellence.
"Some areas are better than others, but they all
could be improved," be said.
Allen Seagren, assistant vice chancellor for
program development and review, said, "I think we've
learned a lot of things about the program and the
process we're going through. It's kind of an
experiment, to open up lines of communication
between the university and the Legislature. And it's a
strengthening of the programs at the university by
this outside input and ideas."
