Fraternity 150 years old
Chi Phis plan celebration
The Greek houses that line 16th Street may
seem like classic landmarks of UNL, and indeed
many of them have interesting histories. This
year marks the 150th anniversary of Chi Phi
fraternity, located near the
Harper-Schramm-Smith residence hall complex.
The UNL Alpha Theta Chi chapter of Chi Phi is
planning activities to celebrate the anniversary,
according to Lee Shannon, chairman of the
anniversary committee.
Shannon said the members of the fraternity
are planning a dance marathon, March 7 and 8 in
the Nebraska Union Ballroom, to support the
fraternity's national philanthropy, the Muscular
Dystrophy Assoc. of America. A $5 fee will be
the admission for participants who will recruit
money pledges to dance all night, he said. He said
the entire University community is invited to
dance.
Alumni banquet
An alumni banquet is also being planned to
celebrate the founding of Chi Phi, the nation's
first social fraternity, he said.
Chi Phi was founded on December 24, 1824,
at Princeton University, Shannon said. Following
the Civil War the North and South versions
joined to symbolize unity and kindness which
remain qualities of high value in the fraternity
today, he said.
The Nebraska chapter was founded on May 9,
1895, as the sixth fraternity on the UNL campus'
he said. The original house, which was located on
D street, was known as Alpha Theta Chi, he said.
The fraternity became Chi Phi on this campus
when they received their charter in 1932,
Shannon said.
The original members of the UNL chapter
were also members of a literary society, and in
1892 began a student newspaper, the Nebraskan,
as competition for the existing Hesperian
Student, Shannon said. After the two papers
merged in 1899, the Nebraskan-Hesperian had as
its editor a member of Alpha Theta Chi. The
name was changed in 1901 to the Daily
Nebraskan, and since then 19 members of the
fraternity have served as editor of the Daily
Nebraskan, Shannon said.
Chi Phi was forced to fold at UNL with the
debut of World War II, and was not resumed
until 1963, when the fraternity moved into its
present house, Shannon said.
Pershing once adviser
The UNL chapter, which once had General
John J. Pershing as an adviser, is part of a
national membership of 30,000, Shannon said. In
addition to supporting its high values, its
members, who last year dribbled a basketball 100
miles to raise $12,000 to donate toward the
prevention of Muscular Dystrophy, also support,
an educational trust which grants $6,000 in
scholarships yearly to its members, he said.
CBS newsman Walter Cronkite, a Chi Phi
alum, has assembled a film which covers the
highlights of the fraternity over the past 150
years. Shannon said the film will be shown as
part of the celebration.
