Political internships offered Applications are being taken to fill two positions through the Political Party Internship program, Robert Sittig, associate professor of political science said. Sittig, who directs the program, said each semester he recommends two university students to the Republican and Democratic state parties. The students are employed two half-days a week and are paid from party funds. They work directly with the executive secretary and party chairman on such assignments as election research, Legislature voting records and organizational committee meetings. Sittig said there is no cost for the application and students are paid about minimum wage. Applicants are taken from any field, although the program is sponsored by the Political Science Department. An optional three credit hour course, entitled Field Studies, may be taken in conjunction with the program. Outside readings are assigned, in addition the actual work, for the course requirements. An intern who worked last semester for State Democratic Party Chairman, Dick White, said she enjoyed the work as an intern. Deborah Baldwin attended campaign strategy meetings, met vith national committeemen and helped organize fund-raising activities for the Democratic Party in Lancaster County. She also did volunteer work on the Exon and Dyas campaigns. One of her major projects was compiling, for the first time, extensive files of computerized voting behavior for Lancaster County. She also conducted a telephone poll in which she found that many voters were undecided. This was a bit discouraging, she said, but "you have to be optimistic just to keep going." All the undecideds were later followed up with personal contacts, she added. Pow wow '75 funded by Student Activities Funding for "Pow Wow '75," has been allocated through the Student Activities Office, Ken Bader, vice chancellor of student affairs said in a letter to the Fees Allocation Board (FAB) Thursday night. The $3,500 allocated to the Council of American Indian' Students (CAIS) was debated at the last two FAB meetings. Last week, the FAB voted to recommend the funding for the pow wow. In the letter, Bader said CAIS, as a student organization, has the right to approach FAB for money. He approved the pow wow funding with three provisions: the funds will be allocated through Student Activities Office; CAIS faculty advisers Jerry Bowker and Galen Buller will serve in a program development capacity; and Gordon Kitto, Indian counselor must co-authorize ail purchases for Indian cultural programming. In other action, the FAB granted ASUN a budget deferment until March 5. The usual deadline for organization's budgets is Monday, Feb. 17. Any late budgets will be reviewed on a reduced priority basis, according to Marguerite Boslaugh, FAB chairman. The FAB also granted $3,000 to the University of Nebraska Rifle Team. They had requested $10,681 to buy new equipment. According to Boslaugh, the rifle team was granted one-third of their request because of limited funds in the FAB contingency fund.
