Sooners win in overtime basketball contest

Before Wednesday night's basketball game
between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the
Oklahoma Sooners, Harry Bruns said he liked close
games. The game turned out to be closer than Harry
probably wished.
Bruns, who for 17 years has swept the Coliseum
floor before Husker games, was one of 7,415 in
attendance as the Sooners made a dent in the
Huskers' bid for the Big 8 championship with a 65-57
overtime victory.
Nebraska led 29-27 at halftime, but the score was
knotted 51-51 at the completion of regulation play.
Oklahoma out-scored Nebraska 14-6 in the five
minute overtime period.
The game was Nebraska's first overtime contest
this season. Oklahoma had been involved in one
overtime game previously, a double-overtime 83-81
loss to Missouri in the Big 8 Tournament.
The loss dropped the Huskers to 5-3 in Big 8 play
while Oklahoma improved its conference mark to 3-5.
Nebraska is 12-8 overall; Oklahoma is 10-10.
The loss evened head coach Joe Cipriano's 12 year
regular season Big 8 mark at 81-81 and was the first
time in four years the Huskers have lost to the
Sooners at home.
Nebraska has lost three of its last four conference
games and Cipriano attributed the slump to a lack of
concentration and hard work by the team.
"We (the coaches) noticed the letdown in Tuesday
night's practice," Cipriano said. He added that he
thought the Huskers had lost their confidence during
the game.
"We were very careless with the basketball
tonight," he said. Nebraska turned the ball over 26
times to Oklahoma's 18. There were also some
questionable calls by the officials at key spots in the
game, according to Cipriano.
Cipriano did find a bright spot in the loss,
however. "Jerry Fort is starting to come back and
play offense like last year," he said.
Fort led all scorers with 32 points as he tied a
Nebraska record with 15 field goals in one game. Fort
set the record last year when he tossed in 33 points

March 19-29 tour
Bats to fly south
A new spring tour has been set for the UNL baseball team.
Instead of traveling south and west to Texas and Arizona, the team
will open its season March 19 at Northwest Missouri State.
Three doubleheaders with Oral Roberts University at Tulsa,
Okla., follow the Northwest Missouri opener. From Oklahoma, the
team will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., where they will play four
games with Arkansas University. En route home March 28 and 29
the team will open its Big 8 season with three games against
Kansas.
"Better opener"
"This trip will be better for us," said Tony Sharpe, head coach.
"The team will not have to miss as much school as last year and the
competition will be better to open vp the season with."
The team began conditioning January 30, Sharpe said. Team
members worked out three days a week until last Monday, when
regular practice began.
Sharpe said the season outlook is hard to determine.
"Last year was my worst in 28 years of coaching," he said. "We
finished last in the Big 8. However, with more experience in the
starting unit this year, we should be a good competitive team.
"Injuries plagued us last year," he added. "This year we had
pretty ood recruiting and if we can get a couple of our new
pitchers to come along, we will be okay."
Ten returning
Ten. lettermen are returning from last year's team. Two-year
lettermen infielder Bryant Akisada and catcher Doak Fowler are
the only senior squad members. Also returning are last year's top
hitters, Paul Haas and Ron Miltenberger.
First-year players to watch, Sharpe raid, are catcher-first
baseman Jon Henne, pitchers Steve Nagel, Randy Phipps and Jerry
Yingling and Larry Winum, a pitchc and first-baseman. The team's
schedule is:
March-19, at Northwest Missouri, two games; 20, at Oral
Roberts, two; 21, at Oral Roberts, two; 22, at Oral Roberts, two;
24, at Arkansas, two; 25, at Arkansas; 28, at Kansas, two; 29, at
Kansas.

against Missouri.
Alvan Adams, the conference's second leading
scorer and leading rebounder, with 24.6 and 13.3
respectively, paced the Sooners with 19 points and 12
rebounds. Adams has been Oklahoma's leading
rebounder in all 20 games.
Nebraska led most of the game, building a 29-21
lead late in the first half before Oklahoma scored six
in a row for the 29-27 halftime score.
After Oklahoma tied the score at the beginning of
the second half, 29-29, Fort scored three straight
field goals to up the Huskers' lead to 35-29.
Nebraska again led by six at 45-39 but the Sooners
pulled into a 4545 deadlock with just under six
minutes remaining. The lead then changed hands six
times in the final two minutes.
Sooner John Gordon, who scored 16 points along
with teammate Mike McCurdy, missed a shot at the
buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Nebraska committed five fouls in the overtime
period to none for Oklahoma, and the Huskers' Larry
Cox and Steve Erwin fouled out.
Oklahoma shot 40.3 per cent from the field while
Nebraska connected on 41.7 per cent of their shots.
The Sooners were 11-15 at the free throw line;
Nebraska was 7-9.
Cox followed Fort with 12 points and Steve Willis
added six. Rickey Harris and Bob Siegel were the
Husker's leading rebounders with 9 and 8
respectively.

With one week left in the UNL men's
intramural basketball season before tournaments
begin, Abel 8 leads the Top Ten as released by
the Recreation Office Wednesday.
Abel 8 leads the pack on the basis of a first
place finish in the UNL basketball marathon last
semester. Beta Theta Pi, the only team in the
Top 10 with a loss, is rated because of its
runner-up finish in the same marathon.
