Agriculture College
to offer new minor
By Don McCabe
Beginning with the 1975 UNL summer sessions students may
obtain a general agriculture minor.
The College of Agriculture faculty, after a recommendation by
.the Course of Study Committee, approved the proposal for the
minor at its Jan. 17 meeting.
Ted Hartung, dean of the UNL College of Agriculture, said the
minor was adopted because of the number of inquiries and the
interest shown from students outside of agriculture.
Majors in business and journalism have shown the most interest,
he said, as well as other Arts and Science majors.
Prominence and relevance
"The prominence of the whole world food picture and the
relevance people see in agriculture today are the reasons there is
the interest," Hartung said.
He said those who take the minor will not be agriculturists but
will be able to use it as a reinforcement to their respective fields.
The minor will provide a general knowledge of agriculture, he said.
To obtain the minor, students must complete a minimum of 18
hours in courses offered by the College of Agriculture, with at least
one, two-or-more credit hour courses in each of three different
areas.
General areas
The general areas include animal science (animal science,
poultry and wildlife sciences or veterinary science); plant sciences
(agronomy, horticulture or forestry) and crop and commodity
protection (entomology, weed science or plant pathology).
Agricultural economics, agricultural education, food science and
technology and mechanized agriculture are other areas from which
a course may be chosen.
At least 9 hours of the agricultural courses must be at the 200
level or above.
