Faculty Senate extends time n rimnt I INI lab courses f w ai - I The UNL Faculty Senate voted Tuesday to extend the drop period for lab courses to the eighth week of the semester, the same as for nonlab courses. The Senate Grading Committee said enrollment pressures, which required that lab courses be dropped "four weeks earlier than other courses, have eased in many departments, and that the four week difference would not result in a significant increase in the number of drops. The change will make the grading system more uniform. The senate also passed a provision which stated that the approval of the dean of the college is no longer needed for a student to change from a grade to passfail or from passfail to grade. Most deans said their approval is automatic in the majority of cases and that this change would reduce the amount of red tape. The committee recommended that a student be allowed to retake courses in which he received a grade of C, but the senate rejected this on the grounds this would encourage the recent inflation of grades. It was observed that a student now needs a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.9 or better to graduate with distinction. However, it was unanimously agreed that the section on "Removal of D and F Grades," printed in the semester class schedule, be rewritten to include the fact that, although the grade of D or F is removed from the students GPA, it still appears on his transcript. This also applies to transfer students from UNO. The committee proposal to change the system on incompletes and reword that section of the semester class schedule failed, on the basis that the present system was adequate. The senate approved the committee's changes on withdrawals which stated that the grade W (withdrawal) be given at the discretion of the individual instructor. After the last date to drop or withdraw, the dean of the college may influence the instructor on his decision if the student has run into unforeseen circumstances, excluding academic problems. 60 YEARS AGO Monday, Feb. 1, 191 5 "In this issue of the Daily Nebraskan the political pot starts boiling. Charles M. Frey announces himself as a candidate for the office of junior managing editor of the 1916 Cornhusker. This is an office which the voters in the sophomore class fill at the general election to be held on Feb. 16." "As a recreation from the strenuous hours of examinations during the past week, tea has been served in a quiet corner of the YWCA rooms. A large number of girls sought rest there each day and were immediately served with tea and wafers by pleasant hostesses." "The members of the Union Literary Society went sleigh riding last Friday night. The crowd was composed of about 10 couples and that they had a good time is the least that can be said of it. The party left the Temple at 8:50 and for the next two hours the jolly Unions rode through the streets of Lincoln. At 1 1 :00 they arrived at the home of Miss Hazel Allen at 1500 C St., where they were served with an oyster supper." sillif The ASUN Senate Meeting will be at 6 p.m., instead of 6:30 p.m., this evening.
