Deadline set for student teaching applications By Paula Damke The deadlines for applications for secondary education majors who plan to student teach during summer school or fall are March 1 . Bert Alfrey, director of secondary education student teaching, said a student must receive a minimum of six hours credit in student teaching to meet requirements for a Nebraska teacher's certificate. Alfrey said the majority of students teach for one half day during one semester and receive eight hours credit. Students who student teach during summer school receive six hours credit. 10 per cent He said approximately 10 per cent of the students teach all day for 15 hours credit. Alfrey said there are between 250 and 300 secondary education students teaching each semester. The greatest number of secondary education major student teachers was in 1971 when 428 students taught in one semester, he said. He said students list on their teaching applications preferred schools where they want to teach and the time of day, either morning or afternoon, they want to teach. He said students have always received requested time periods but, some students do not receive preferred schools. Lincoln area Alfrey said 80 per cent of UNL students teach in the Lincoln area, including Waverly and Hickman, and 20 per cent teach in the Omaha area. Students, he said, realize Omaha has more job offerings, and want to student teach where they may get a job. Alfrey said the transportation problem for most can be worked out if they plan ahead. He said "it is difficult for me to understand how senior level students can't figure out a way to get to the school." Student teachers are graded by the classroom teacher and by their college supervisors. They write a final evaluation or a recommendation for the student's file as well as giving a grade. Pass-fail Students can take their student teaching pass fail, he said. Alfrey said students teach in only their major area. Dual majors often try to teach in both areas, he said. Summer school student teaching, he said, is limited because the secondary education dept. uses only Lincoln East Junior and Senior High School. Alfrey said many students taking methods prior to their student teaching have been in a classroom and may know where they will student teach. He said in some areas, such as journalism, the student will be teaching for the first time in the high school classroom. ogifi ads 1972 Porsche 914, 1$74 Ford Van-Tastic.
