A scene from William Saroyan's "The Time of Your Life."
British theatre group
to perform at UNO
By Susan Edwards
A historic theater experience is coming to the University of
Nebraska: The British-American Theatre Festival.
In March, five plays will be produced by two- famous
professional theater companies-the New York City Center Acting
Company in Lincoln and England's Royal Shakespeare Company at
UNO- ... ,
March 18, 19, 25 and 26 the City Center Company will produce
Chekhov's The Tfiree Sisters, Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer,
and Saroyan's The Time of Your Life at UNL's Kimball Recital
Hall.
The Royal Shakespeare Company will perform five shows of
Love's Labour's Lost and thres shows of a condensed Lear in the
UNO Performing Arts Bldg.
Free round trip chartered bus service, except for Lear, will be
provided to ticket holders.
$2 student tickets
Student tickets for City Center productions are $2 for each
play. Prices for Love's Labour's Lost range from $5 to $8 apiece
and Lear tickets are $10. Tickets for all plays are now available at
the Westbrook Box Office.
Now in its third season, the New York City Center Acting
Company is the only professional, permanent touring company in
America. It combines teaching demonstrations and workshops in
addition to classical and modern performances.
The troupe, according to Ron Bowlin, UNL Performing Arts
coordinator, studied together at Juilliard in New York City and
formed a troupe after graduation at the suggestion of John
Houseman, Juilliard Drama Division head.
Directed by Houseman, Academy Award winner for "Paper
Chase," and Margot Harley, the company became the permanent
dramatic arm of the New York City Center of Music and Drama.
Their unique Juilliard training in voice elocution and movement
and dance, Bowlin said, will be demonstrated in workshops.
Based on the theories of director-producer Michel Saint-Denis,
the training focuses heavily on the technical disciplines and
thorough ground training in classical theat-r. One of the training
exercises to be demonstrated is Mask Work, illustrating rapid
changes in character. A lab production of Samuel Beckett's Play
will be shown to Lincoln public schools.
In its first season, the company won an Obie Award for its
off-Broadway productions. Give Barnes of the New York Times
called them "the finest repertory company in New York City."
The 21 actors and actresses travel by bus, with costumes and
scenery for all productions preceding them by truck. Bowlin said
the company travels with complete sets for each production.
The plays they will perform at Kimball include The Three
Sisters on March 18, a story of three young, gifted women at the
turn of the century who are trapped in a provincial Russian town
and yearn to return to Moscow.
Tragicomedy
Saroyan's Vie Time of Your Life, showing March 19 in matinee
and evening performances, is a tragicomedy set in the late 1930s.
She Stoops to Conquer, to be performed March 26, is a comedy of
mistaken breeding and a young man's shyness with well-bred
women.
Their Lincoln appearance, sponsored by the NU Cultural Affairs
Committee, is part of a tour coordinated by the Mid-America Arts
Alliance in conjunction with the Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and
Oklahoma Arts Councils. Grants from the National Endowment for
the Arts, the Mid-America Arts Alliance and the Nebraska Arts
Council will help sponsor the Company's visit.
