Herb Duis of Gothenburg. The b;ll is similar to a bill introduced several years ago which guaranteed claims against fire and casualty insurance companies, he said LB2H is a preventive measure to insure payment of claims against life and health insurance companies, Duis said. All life and health insurance companies selling policies in Nebraska would contribute to a general guarantee fund that would be used to pay claims against a company that goes broke, he said. Duis said the program will not cost the state because the guarantee fund is provided by the companies themselves. "It's very similar to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) act," he said. "It's like taking a dose of preventive medicine. We're trying to halt the trouble before it starts. Duis said he had no particular companies in mind when he mentioned the possibility of a company failing to pay claims. There is no limit to the monetary value of the claims that will be guaranteed, he said. He said his intention in introducing the bm was to protect Nebraskans from insurance companies. Problems plagued alumni days Whatever happened to Alumni College Weekend? The event, scheduled for January 30 through February 2, was being "revived for the first time in a decade to give alumni the opprotunity tc examine, in a relaxed, on-campus setting, the various aspects of the University they attended and its educational role," Jack Miller, executive vice president of tht Alumni Association said last week. Then, the day before the activities were to begin, the Alumni Assoc. cancelled its plans. A news release cited "lack of response" as the reason for calling off the event. Miller was unavailable for comment, but Carole Reno, director of alumni services, blamed a combination of problems which forced the cancellation. "The blizzard was a part of it (reservations were due the day of the blizzard, January 10),H Reno said. But tnere were some orner reasons, too, I think." She said she thinks the economic situation prevented some alums from making a return trip to the campus. A registration fee of $50 per person was asked, and only five people had paid the fee by Wednesday. A third problem was the event's timing. Reno noted that scheduling the event so soon after Christmas made it difficult for some to attend. Also, the activities planned for Friday would force those attending to miss a day of work. The weekend, which would have been co-sponsored by the Alumni Assoc. and the Extension Division, hasn't been rescheduled yet, according to Reno. "We're working with the Extension Division on developing pieces of the program into a couple of different programs," she said. EMtifcMi ASUN Agenda si Today, 6:30 p.m., Nebraska Union I.
