Modern misconception
Dear editor:
Greetings. I am a 33-year-old hippie Jew. I was
born in Bethlehem, Penn. I am the first son of Joseph
and Mary Christopher. They were not expecting me
(virgin birth is not a misconception!). I now live in
Nazareth, Pa., and am employed as a carpenter. But I
believe there are greater things ahead for me.
Certain facts lead me to believe that I am the
Messiah. When I read in your paper of a voice (That's
Josh!) crying in the wilderness in the desolate land of
Nebraska, I was immediately sure that he is a modern
day John the Baptist. I have contacted Josh and
convinced him that I am the King of Kings. Me has
agreed to baptize rne in the Platte River at some point
in the future, when I feel ready to assume the
awesome duties of a son of God.
You shall know when the time is come, for this
shall be a sign unto you: wooly mammoths will fill
the land and you shall beat your swords into
sheepshears
Josh the Jester and I are collaborating on a new
book, You can Profit from a Spiritual Crisis, to be
published by Son O'God Press (a division of Holy
Trinity Industries, Inc.) at a list price of $14.95.
Watch for it in good bookstores everywhere (and I
mean everywhere).

Dear editor:
I was quite amused by your editorial of Jan. 27
and also the opinion page where it appears Bruce
Nelson "knows all."
I found it evident that you had already formed an
opinion and left the wax in your ears as you watched
Josh Sunday evening. Your problem, Mr. Albers, is
not one of knowledge but of the will to accept, or
possibly even examine, the facts.
I wonder-had it been a two-month campaign
announcing the arrival of Jethro Tull would you have
been so upset with the pamphlets and leaflets? I
suggest that Josh may be scratching where you are
itching!

Missed again
Dear editor:
I see that once again students are missing the real
issue here the violations of University policy by
Josh. The blame for this rests both on the University
and the five sponsoring campus organizations.
It is time that students look at this and see that
there indeed is a double standard in enforcement.
What is done is done, but I would like to see firm
steps taken to prevent anything like this from
happening in the future.
If no action is taken, that will just allow it to
happen again. Let's support efforts to stop it.

Typo exposed
Dear editor:
An editorial appeared in last Monday's Daily
Nebraskan which must have been a monstrous
typographical error. I refer to the editorial entitled
"Fanaticism-hold your breath, pinch your nostrils,"
in which Bruce Nelson exposes Josh McDowell for
what he really is-Francis Schaeffer.
To say that a man cannot live consistently within
his philosophy is simply not an ad hominem attack.
To say that Sartre is unable to live within his
existentialism is not to criticize the man Sartre but
rather to say that no man can live the existential life,
divorced from absolute values and valueless himself.
A better example of the ad hominem attack is
illustrated when the rationalist Nelson sarcastically
refers to. "super-saint Schaeffer" and warns the reader
to watch for fanaticism's latest "Elmer Gantry."
The most outrageous part of the entire article,
however, was the forewarning given by prophet
Nelson that, indeed, a few guilt-ridden freshmen
reeling from experiences with drugs and sex would
succumb to the glossy ad vertisement of Jesus freaks.
To say that one need be somehow mentally doped in
order to accept the faith embraced by such as T.S.
FJiot, C.S. Lewis and St. Augustine, is really
foolishness.
After reading the editorial I consoled myself by
thinking that fools will always be fools, and if
academic freedom is to be observed, we must endure
such people. But then I was struck by the realization
that academic freedom was not being observed as I,
by involuntary payment of my student fees, was
supporting the secularist trash spewed forth by
writers on the Daily Nebraska such as Bruce Nelson.
"No one on this campus is forced to buy
Christianity Today, so why must I or anyone else buy
a paper with which we disagree? In the name of
academic freedom, let this tyrannical practice come
to an end at the University of Nebraska.

Intellectuals and Christians
Dear editor:
I wish to direct through you a few words to your
columnist Bruce Nelson and his rather peculiar
comment, (Monday, Jan. 27) that "I have never seen
a Christian intellectual. As far as I am concerned a
Christian intellectual is a contradiction in terms."
Mr. Nelson, if, as far as you are concerned, there is
no such animal, I am thoroughly disturbed. I hold
myself to be a Christian. Does this mean that I am
relegated to spend my time aimlessly wandering
about in total ignorance, chewing gum and listening
to Donny and Marie? Will I never be able to
understand the words of my fellow Christian
non-intellectuals, T.S. Eliot, C.S. Lewis or Thomas
Aquinas?
Much of your argument against Schaeffer's book
was that his attack was often against a man's
personality and not his ideas. However you in your
argument pushed the ad hominem attack ad nauseam.
You call the man ignorant, a name dropper, a
hypocrite and say he is on the same spiritual plane as
Elmer Gantry. I see no logical excuse for condemning
one man's devices while adopting them as your own.
Perhaps the main reason you created this general
attack against the Christian philosophy (and it was an
attack against the main body of Christianity, recall
"the great white way to Jesus") is that you, like
many Americans, raised in a Christian culture and
being constantly exposed to it, have never really
understood it.
The next time you feel the urge to make such
prejudical, biased and (I say this because you seem so
fond of the word) ignorant remarks as were made in
Monday's paper I submit that you do with them as
the title of your column says: hold your breath,
pinch your nostrils.
