'History
of Sport'
popular
at UNL
The history of sport is being taught this semester for the first
time at UNL.
Professor of Ifcstory Ben Rader, the course's instructor, said he
expected to have about 25 students in the class, but over 100
preregistered.
Rader said he, as well as the History Department was surprised
at the popularity of the class; He said it is unusual for an upper
division history class to have that many students enrolled.
He said the course deals mainly with ancient Greek sports, 19th
and 20th century sport in the United States, and sport in the
underdeveloped countries of Europe.
Viewing the role of sport with respect to society will be the
main objective of the class, Rader said.
He said sport has an affect on the average person's social
patterns, norms, values and sexual roles.
Rader said when the course was proposed, the Women's Physical
Education Dept. expressed an interest and promised to have some
of their students register.
He said 40 per cent of the class are women.
Rader, who also teaches an American Intellectual and American
History survey course, said he will have two graduate students
assisting with the History of Sport class.
He said he hopes to divide the class into discussion sections and
has plans for guest lecturers.
The course, which can count as a social science general
requirement, meets twice weekly for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
