    Financial
problems
hurt UNL
bus
John Duve, UNL parking coordinator, spoke to the AS UN
Senate Wednesday night, about the financial problems of running
the intercampus bus service.
He said UNL campus security has run the service since about
1971, and losses have been recorded each year. Estimated
expenditures for the service are $95,000 for the current school
year, he said.
Parking lot development and other campus security services are
hurt because of the increased cost, he said. He suggested that the
OOKV UNL Dept. of Academic Services take over the service.
Owl V I WW Money received from sales of parking permits helps pay for the
service, but he suggested that state funds, student fees, charges to
bus users or reimbursement from the departments whose students
use the buses be used for the funding in the future.
He said the financial problems are responsible for other
problems such as overcrowding. Action is being taken to alleviate
overcrowding at peak periods, he said.
ASUN President Ron Clingenpeel said in his report of
Saturday's N.U. Board of Regents meeting that the approved $95
hike in room and board rates for next year definitely was better for
students than the proposed $140 increase, but that he still objected
to the lack of student input in the matter.
He said if dormitory occupancy continues to decrease next year,
he expects another rate increase the following year.
In other business, Jim Say, Student Rights Committee
chairman, said the Legislative Liaison Committee is planning to
have a bill introduced in the Legislature which would make
consumption of 3.2 beer by 18-year-olds legal. If passed, it could
prompt the regents to allow alcohol on campus, he said.
In her report, Sharon Johnson, ASUN first vice president, said
the ASUN Book Exchange in the Nebraska Union sold $4,152.51
worth of books this semester, compared to about $1,400 last
semester.
