' ' ' Sara Ganz as Magda in The Consul. 'Consul' a total theatrical event By Susan Edwards Gian-Carol Menotti's "The Consul," opening Friday in Kimball Recital Hall, is a total theater experience. The contemporary story, with a plot which 'people can identify, is as enjoyable as the music-a situation you don't always find in opera, according to house manager John Brandstetter. Unlike much contemporary opera, 'The Consul" is considered a standard in repertory. The opera, which won the Pulitzer Prize and Music Drama Critics' Award, will run Friday, Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. in Kimball. Students should be able to visualize the action easily, Brandstetter said. A multi-media show with films and slides emphasizes the dramatic action and mood. A magician also performs. Not a light love story, the plot concerns a man who has fled a country governed by a brutal, totalitarian regime. He leaves behind his wife, mother, and child. The family's attempt to get visas and escape the country are frustrated by the uncooperative consul, a wall of paperwork and red tape. No heavenly being arrives to save the family and the wife finally despairs. Since Menotti was a stage director, his shows have more meat to them than most operas, Brandstetter said. He said the difficult music roles necessitated some double casting. Sara Ganz and Jane Mathew will alternate the lead of Magda, the wife. Kent Flail sings the role of John Sorel, the husband, and Mary Kusek plays the mother. The performance also marks the 20th anniversary of Howell Memorial Theatre. In 1949 the Temple Bldg. theater closed its doors to operas and theater performances after being condemned as a fire trap. The new, remodeled $450,000 Howell Memorial Theatre opened in 1955 equipped "with the most modern backstage devices," according to an artical in the Nebraska Alumni. To celebrate the opening, the Department of Music and the University Theater selected "The Consul" for performance. Dr. Dallas Williams was director and Dr. David Foltz directed the orchestra. According to the article, the new Howell Theatre capacity-75 light changes, rapid scene changes, and a stereophonic control system with 27 microphone outlets. "The music-drama is filled with emotion, both in music and in acting-stiffness has vanished," the article said. Tickets are available to students for $2.50 at the Westbrook Music Bldg. box office.
