Through the aid of the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) and the
Remote Sensing Center at UNL, Nebraskans may
be able to find out useful information in areas of
agriculture, water resources and other related
fields.
A second Earth Resources Technology
Satellite (ERTS) launched Sunday from
California will allow continuation of research
projects conducted with information from
ERTS-1, launched in July 1972.
The data received from the satellites involve
studies conducted in 40 states and 40 other
countries, said Jay Fussell, publications officer
with the Conservation and Survey Division of
UNL.
ERTS-1 has already sent back about 100,000
images, he said.
"It (ERTS-1) has been most helpful," Fussell
said. "It's probably one of the most successful
peace time satellites ever launched."
The satellites will offer repetitive coverage of
the earch, completing an orbit every 18 days, at
about 565 miles above the earth surface, Fussell
said.
Planners at all levels of the government have
taken advantage of this resource information
system, Fussell said.
According to Fussell the data may be used for
inventory of center-pivot irrigation systems for
fuel allocation needs, inventory of surface water
storage and water resources. It may also help in
updating land use maps and determining the
extent of range fires and wind erosion, Fussell
said.
"We've also used them to locate major linear
features to help in the locating of nuclear power
plants in areas that are relatively earthquake
free," Fussell Said.
The information acquired by the Remote
Sensing Center, located in the Conservation and
Survey Division, is available to all persons,
Fussell said.
"ERTS-1 and 2 provide information that is
freely available to everyone on a world-wide
basis. Shortly after the station acquires imagery,
it is in the public domain," he said.

Carpet! And you don't have to buy 1,000 square yards or pay a super
high price for it either. The honest truth is, these "offerings" are
remnants left over yardage from some of the homes we've carpeted
for Lincoln home builders.
They're in all different sizes and shapes and many of them should be
just right for a college room, or apartment.
Why not stop by and take a look. You'll never know what wild,
wonderful things you could do to your room until you see what
we've got.
