OSHA safety act University complying UNL is becoming a safer place for its employes and students to work, study and play, the director of UNLs Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS) said. Edward Simpson, Jr., said UNL is moving toward compliance with the 1970 Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations. The University, however, has not been forced to comply with OSHA standards, he said. "The state has not adopted the provisions of the act," he said. "If Nebraska adopts the provisions of OS! A, then all state agencies must control hazards to safety. Best interests "It is in the best interests of university employes and students to begin moving toward compliance with OSHA standards," Simpson explained. But UNL is not moving toward compliance with OSHA standards as fast as it could, Earle Brown,. DEHS engineer, said. Brown said belt guards must be installed on some small power equipment and hand rails must be installed in some buildings, to name a few hazards to eliminate before UNL complies with the OSHA regulations. "It will take several years to make small changes such as repairs on equipment, before UNL is in compliance with OSHA regulations," Brown said. Lack of money Another problem facing the DEHS is the lack of money to make building repairs, Brown said. "Funds are bottlenecks," he said. "It will cost several million dollars for UNL to comply with OSHA regulations and the biggest expense will be construction to build or remodel campus buildings. "The funds for major construction projects just are not available," he said. Brown also said the DEHS has issued safety glasses and ear protection in areas where they are needed. In danger areas, safety devices must be worn to comply with OSHA standards. "If the University is safe for employes, it will be safe for students," Brown said.
