Fees to buy computer? The $5 fee students must pay for droos and adds-totaling some $70,000 annually-is stored in a "general instructional budget " according to Robert Lovitt, comptroller for business and finance at UNL. Although Lovitt said this budget is used for a variety of activities, he added "the $5 probably doesn't even cover the administrative costs." This money soon may be channeled in another direction if a report by the Council on Student Life's (CSL) Registration Task Force is acted on. That report recommended that the fees be used to buy a remote terminal computer for processing drops and adds. Ted Pheiler, director of registration and records for academic services and a member of the task force committee, said he would support such a plan "wholeheartedly." He added that several problems would have to be ironed-out first. The computers used in the free drop and add period prior to the beginning of the semester are not available for the weeks of regular drop and add. Pheifer said his department has no terminals of its own; the borrowed computers must be used for instructional purposes during the semester. Money is also required for personnel, bookkeeping, etc. to run such a system, Pheifer emphasized. His department now does not have that money, he said. He added, however, that if the money collected from drops and adds was separated from the general funds, it probably would be enough to solve the monetary problems. ' Although a computer system would greatly improve the process, Pheifer added that drops and adds are only a small per cent of the system. He said he hopes for a gradual development of the entire student records systems. Up to this time, Pheifer said, only small areas have been patched up one at a time. "We need to stop patching the inner-tube and buy a new tire," he added. iAj(rt ads FOR SALE Brand new small 13", 14", & 1 5" Goodyear discontinued tires in reg. or mud & snow tred, $14 each plus tax while they last.
