Kees Otten, founder and director of Syntagma Musicum, demonstrates one of many
Renaissance instruments.
Renaissance group fo perform
By Susan Edwards
Fans of the UNL Performing Arts Series will
be treated to the ancient sounds of krummhorns,
sackbuts and shawms in a performance of
Syntagma Musicum, a Renaissance music
ensemble, 8 p.m. Saturday at Kimball Hall.
The six musicians recreate the music of the
Middle Ages and Renaissance on instruments of
that time and with voice.
Syntagma Musicum, which derives its name
from a 1619 musical practice book by Michael
Practorius, was founded in 1963 by its current
director, Kees Otten.
The group strives for authenticity as well as
fun. Their large collection of ancient instruments
contains virtually unknown reproductions of
museum prototypes.
According to Kees, ancient instruments are
difficult to play-a player is certain of what he
has blown into a krummhorn, but is not sure
what is going to come out.
The audience will hear the curious harmonies
on the precursor of the oboe, the shawm, and on
the bassoon's ancestor, the curtal. The recorder
family, portative organs and an early violin
family member, the viola da gamba, also will be
played.
In addition, the performance is a chance to be
charmed by the strains of "Myn Morken Gaf My
Een Jonck Wijff." Tickets are available at the
Westbrook Music Bldg. box office.
