NU Press gets new director The new director of the University of Nebraska Press said Monday he will try to keep the NU press as successful and prestigious as possible. David H. Gilbert, became director Jan. 1, succeeding Fred Link, who was acting director for one year. A UNL search committee selected Gilbert from about 100 applicants. The 40-year-old California native said the NU Press, under the direction of Link and Bruce Nicoll, director from 1958 to 1973, was made into one of the top 15 or 20 presses in the country. "We will try to keep the NU Press as distinguished as possible," he said. The major duty of the NU Press, Gilbert said, is to publish scholarly books of the region written by NU faculty members and professors from other universities. The strength of the press, he said, is in its publishing of English, Great Plains and western literature. Gilbert said he is interested in these types of literature, which attracted him to NU. In addition to maintaining the present stature of the NU press, he said he hopes to broaden its responsibilities to include more books and research papers of NU faculty members. Gilbert said he also would like to see research at east campus emphasized. Agriculture is . becoming more important to everyone and more of its research needs to be published, he said. Before assuming his post, Gilbert was associate director of the University of Texas Press. He has taught English at Oregon State University and has worked for a commercial publisher. He received degrees from the Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. and the University of Colorado. i As director of the NU Press, Gilbert will be paid $25,000.
