AS UN President Ron Clingenpeel got a free trip to the
Sugar Bowl and an invitation to the Governor's Inaugural
Ball as part of the benefits of being a nonvoting member of
the NU Board of Regents.
Regent just lacks vote
Extras come with job
An expense-paid trip to the Sugar Bowl and television
exposure are two of the extras AS UN President Ron Clingenpeel
gets as a nonvoting member of the NU Board of Regents.
Clingenpeel, who was sworn in Dec. 12, has all the rights,
responsibilities and privileges of a full member of the board, with
the exception of the vote,
Clingenpeel said that although he enjoyed the trip to New
Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, he wouldn't have gone if his trip had
been financed by student fees.
The NU athletic dept. paid the air fare and hotel and food
costs for each regent.
"As far as I know, I haven't received that much (ss student
regent)," Clingenpeel added. "Of course, I was elected in
December and I will be through in March. I don't know what
football brings, I don't know what the basketball season brings."
"I was invited to the Governor's Inaugural Ball," he said, "but
I still had to pay $10."
He said the next UNL student regent, who takes office in
March after the ASUN election, will get free football tickets.
More interviews with reporters and television exposure have
also come with his new position, he said.
"If you call that a privilege," he added.
Last week, Clingenpeel shared the spotlight with Regent Ed
Schwartzkopf on the TV program "Dateline Nebraska."
All regents are given expenses to attend the meetings. But
Clingenpeel said that living in Lincoln means he will not need any
expense money.
Rare cancer cluster
found in Kearney area
A rare clustering of lymphoma cases, a type of cancer, has been
discovered in the Kearney area, according to a University of
Nebraska Medical Center official.
Dr. Michael Verlin, assistant professor of medicine in the
medical center hemotology division, said he has no idea when the
cases were first discovered in the Kearney area.
Lymphoma, a tumor of the lymph nodes, is not rare, he said.
But, Verlin said, a clustering of cases in such a small area is rare.
Verlin said he did not know the exact number of cases in the
area, but he did say it has affected all ages and apparently is not
hereditary.
"It's something more complicated than leukemia," he said. "It
is being investigated right now. No one is sure what cauws it.
Everything is purely speculative."
It is unlikely that the water supply has caused the disease,
Verlin said, because lymphoma is not the result of such a simple
cause-effect relationship.
"Since Kearney is somewhat of an agriculturally-oriented area,
there is some speculation that animal viruses may have something
to do with the cause," he said. "A virus causes this tumor in
animals, and there is some speculation here that there might be a
carry-over affect on humans."
However, Verlin said a virus that causes a malignant tumor in
humans has not been discovered.
Patients are given standard drugs as medication for lymphoma,
he said. The drugs have the side-effect of suppressing the immunity
system in the body, he said. Thus patients using this medication are
more susceptible to colds and other minor ailments, he said.
