series
This weekend, the Sheldon Film Theater wil
present the seventh installment in Lord Kenneth
Clark's most recent film series. "Romantic Versus
Classic Art". This week's segment will deal with
French artists Auguste Rodin and Edgar Degas.
Rodin. Clark reminds us. was the last heir to the
great Romantics of the 19th century. More a
modeler than a carver, his instruments of power
were his fingers. His hands, like those of a healer,
promoted life through their touch. Obsessed with
the study of hands. Rodin kept a drawer full of
plaster, ones that he would pull out and
contemplate.
Clark concluded from his study that Rodin was
at his best only when working from n indefinite
concept, since when he set out to depict a certain
subject, his work began to show a slightly
mannered technique.
Of all the great painters of the 19th century.
Edgar Degas was the most dyed-in-the-wool tradi
tionalist. He spent his time in galleries and print
collections, and was a tireless copyist. He
particularly admired the painter who had become
the patron saint of Orthodoxy. Ingres. It was a
strange beginning, remarks Lord Clark, for an
artist who was to be considered a revolutionary.
But in fact. Degas was by nature a classicist,
possibly the last great classical figure in. European
painting.
Film times arc at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and 3
p.m. Sunday. The films are open to the public and
there is no admission charge.

concert by three jazz lab bands at 8 p.m. tonight at
Kimball Recital Hall.
"''Anew composition, "Seymoria," by Randall
Snyde7 instructor "of theory and composition, will
be featured.
There will also be a contemporary dance
ensembJe "Trudance & Co.." under the direction
of Trudance Knicely. The group will present " The
Hanging Garden" by Marius Nordal with the t ab
Band i.
There will be an admission charge of $1 .
