Union game room out of room By Larry Stunkel The Nebraska Union game room should be expanded to meet a demand which has outgrown the available space, according to Pat Scanlon, Union recreation programs adviser. According to Scanlon, while the profit realized by the game room has increased annually since its opening in the 1950s, its operating space hasn't. "We really need expansion," Scanlon said. "Right now we're operating at capacity, but we're at a standstill because we're limited in our space and we don't have enough space to meet the demand." Improvements made last summer included remodeling the bowling alleys, the addition of new pool tables, foosball tables and pinball machines while a number of games were moved into the concession area near the game room. "I'd like to move into the North and South conference rooms just off the present game room," Scanlon said. "We'd add at least two pool tables, two more foosball tables and five pinball machines." Scanlon said the expansion would involve little expense and return a larger profit. He cited the remodeling of the Kansas State game room last year and the increased profits that resulted. Even though residence halls and fraternities at UNL have both installed games and games areas in the past year, Scanlon said the Union games room still returned a 25 percent increase in profit over the last year. "It's a healthy operation at a low cost," Scanlon added. "We've purpose ly kept our prices lower than private businesses to encourage students to use the areas here. Our bowling is the lowest in town and we reduced our price to play pool." ,"Vr it.', -.-I wo 4, V." Speech clinic to get new home As of January, 1976, the Barkley Center for Communicative Disorders will provide a new home for the Speech Pathology and Audiology Dept., the Specialized Office for the Deaf, and the Special Education Office. The building, located on East Campus south of the new Law School and east of the School of Dentistry, is being constructed for the purpose of preparing persons to work with the deaf, as well as those with speech and hearing handi caps, according to Robert McGlone, director of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Clinic. The Barkley Center will house all materials for teaching the deaf, the speech and hearing clinic, the special education clinic, faculty offices, class rooms, a pre-school nursery for deaf children and those with language and learning disorders, library facilities, the speech and hearing research laboratory, and the audiology clinic, McGlone said. The center is dedicated to William E. Barkley, a prominent Lincoln banker who died in 1944, and his wife Edna, who taught the deaf in her home, and then at the University until her death in 1956. In their wills, the Barkleys provided what is expected to total approximately $4 million to be used for the training of teachers for the deaf and hard of hearing, and people with speech defects. McGlone added that Robert E. Stepp will be director of the Barkley Center. 41 (t n. U 1 1. 4 V '" 8-r)i ui'ii jj n,)wi"FnrnWiuj (t sir OK JCL' !
