SAM will once again be assisting the Lincoln
Police Dept. on Christmas day, according to Lew
Pachman, SAM fraternity member. He said that
thg purpose of the annual event is to benefit the
community during the holiday season. "It lets
more people spend Christmas with the members
of their family," Pachman said.
Pachman said SAM, as well as other Jewish
members of the community go out on calls on
Christmas day, taking the place of police officers.
He said that last year one volunteer wrestled a
burglar to the ground permitting police officers to
apprehend him.
Though they will not be celebrating Christmas,
Jewish students are getting their chance to
celebrate the holiday season a little early.
Hannukah, Dec. 8 through Dec. 15, commemor
ates the rededication of the temple over 2000 years
ago by the Maccabees, said Rabbi Robert Kaiser,
counselor for the Jewish Student Foundation.
He said people have the misconception that
Hannukah is just a "Jewish Christmas" and that
simply is not true.
"It has never been such a major festival,"
Rabbi Kaiser said. "In fact, it is the only Jewish
festival not mentioned in the Bible."
He said Hannukah began more as a secular
event than as a' religious celebration. Gift
exchanging, parties and family reunions take up
much of the eight-day festival, he said.
