'JTF I YYA'S Glass Menagerie 19th & By Jim Sajevic Is there a doctor In the house? There is If you're attending a UNL athletic event. First aid is provided for spectators at all Nebraska sports activities, according to Dr. Sam Fuenning, UNL director of athletic medicine. These first aid stations are manned by volunteer workers and are funded entirely by the Athletic Dept. no student fees are used, he said. First aid is usually all that's required at most UNL athletic events because of the minor injuries spectators receive, Fuenning said. He cited lacerations, burns and fainting as minor injuries common to spectators attending most sports activities. Nebraska football fans, however, receive additional medical care in the form of a life support system, Fuenning said. The first of its kind when established . in 1966, the life- support system team recognizes and treats football spectators who develop cardiac or heart problems, he said. More common at football games Fuenning said heart attacks are more common at Nebraska football games because spectators are exposed to high emotional stress and tension, more pregame eating and drinking, and inclement weather conditions. Atten dance is also a determining factor, he said. "The more people attending a game, the greater the chance that a cardiac case wilf develop," he said. "And heart disorders are our most serious problem because they are matters of life and death." Fuenning said there are actually two teams of emergency personnel and equipment in Memorial Stadium during Nebraska games. One team covers the stadium while the other covers the Lincoln area and backs up the first emergency team, he said. Emergency medical technicians, port- able stretchers and oxygen are located at both ends of the stadium and can be summoned if a spectator collapses or complains of chest pains, Fuenning said. Basic life support Basic life support begins immediately in the stands when mobile team personnel reach a victim, Fuenning said. Recovery chances are better If a heart attack victim receives medical attention within three to five minutes of his attack, he said. Once inside the life support building under the northwest corner of the stadium, a victim receives heart therapy according to the situation while his heart is monitored by cardiac specialists, Fuenning said. As soon as the victim's condition has stabilized he is moved to one of Lincoln's three coronary care units, he said. The life support system costs UNL $1,182 per season, including 11 compli mentary football tickets and $25 for each intern who covers a certain area of the stadium, Fuenning said. This means the average cost per life saved through the program amounts to $84, he said. Voluntary service, equipment All other services and equipment provided are voluntary, Fuenning said. Federal, state and local funds and grants are not used to finance the program, he said. "I think our life support unit volunteers deserve a major tribute," Fuenning said. "They are making a community contribution the university should be thankful for." Fuenning said the project is support ed by the Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Lincoln Mobile Heart Team, UNL, Lincoln police, Nebraska Heart Associa tion and the Lancaster County Medical Society. Some of these groups provide funds and others provide assistance in the education of program personnel, he said. Fuenning added that it may be necessary to expand the life support system to cover basketball games when the new fieldhouse is completed be cause of the increase in tendance and possible increase of cardiac incident. Correction Not all leassu.can be terminated simply by giving the landlord 30 days notice as was indicated in the Daily Nebraskan, Dec. 5. According to David Rasmussen, ASUN Student Legal Services lawyer, there are a variety of leases and a variety of notice requirements. Getting out of a lease is not as simple as giving 30 day's notice, he said. 1 u ADX) I Ml Mil I if... .1 1 1 " , CLJT-M- BEEFJERKY not for vegetarians. . . because they're real beef.
