The trip resulted in a two garne split over the weekend with the remaining game Tuesday night at North Texas State. The Cornhuskers participated in their second Sun Devil CJassic Friday and Saturday in Tempe,' Arizona. In their first appearance in the tournament in 1968, the Huskers lost both games, to Arizona State and California. Coach Joe Cipriano's squad turned in a much more credible performance their second time around, however. Nebraska's first round oppo nents were the Long Beach State 49ers, 24-2 last season and ranked in the top twenty in preseason polls this fall. Huskers surprised 49ers The Cornhuskers surprised the highly favored 49ers, winning a tight defensive struggle, 67-55. The contest was the first between the two schools in Nebraska's 78-year basketball history. Cipriano was elated with the win and said his team's defensive play was the key. Nebraska, third in the Big 8 in defense last season, allowed the 49ers only 27 points in the first half and 28 in the second. All Big 8 guard Jerry Fort led the Husker scoring with 27 points. Cipriano said Ford has improved offensively and is a strong candi date for ail-American honors this season. The other half of the Huskers' backcourt combination, guard Steve Willis, tallied 12 points. Forward Bob Siegel added 11, while leading the squad with 13 rebounds. Tables turned The tables were turned Saturday night, however, when the Corn huskers faced the host team, the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Sun Devils, victors over Montana Fri day night, jumped to a 37-29 halftirne lead over the Scarlet and Cream and then coasted to a 83-62 win. The Cornhuskers were out rebounded (46 to 35), out-shot from the field (29 field goals to 21), and from the charity stripe (25 free throws to 20). The Sun Devils led by 11 points early in the contest and the Huskers couldn't recover, never leading in the game. Willis and Fort paced Nebraska with 13 points each. Center Larry Cox scored nine points from the line and finished with 1 1 . The Big 8 tournament December 26-30, looks tougher every day for the Cornhuskers. Preseason favor ites Kansas and Oklahoma are rapidly establishing themselves as the class of the conference. r i . ' "IP: X i,tru tS ner Plar.k Bor0L lsPn"e,d fey ,owa s,al8 31-6.
