Student's interests diversified Most people think of an architect as the person who designed a special building, Leach, a fifth-year archi tecture student, said, '8utf the archk: tect is much . more , diversified," he . added.- . , , , ; vo.y- According to Leach, the architect must supervise the construction of buildings, the purchase of materials ana the specifications of the buildings dimensions. The architect must be able to isolate a problem, analyze it and work towards solving it, he said. Ed Leach fulfills' the qualifications of such an architect, according to John Benson, assistant dean of the College of Architecture. "Leach is one of the extremely fine and analytical scholars we've had in the College of Architec ture." Benson said. "Ed is also an interesting mix of interests." Benson said. According to Leach, he has three main interests: architecture, structural engineering and music. Each of these interests help make up his personality, he said. 'x One of the most significant of Leach's activities was the winning of the Leo Daly Traveling Scholarship, which provided him a 32-week trip to Europe to study architecture last summer. - Two Phases According to Leach, the trip was divided into two phases: a semester of study in London and 17 weeks of traveling throughout Europe. Leach's original scholarship proposal 'called ' for a' study of "lightweight ,:' structures in Europe. He said he especially admires the work of Frieotto, a German architect who did the cable-net structures at the 1972 Munich Olympics and is consider ed a leader in the field. According to Benson, Leach's exhibi tion of photos taken during his trip is "a fine professional showing." t Some differences between American and European architecture are because of the climate, Leach said. Because the buildings are designed for the climate, he said a British building might never make it .through a Nebraska winter: Architectural firm During high school and college, Leach said he worked at an architectural firm in Omaha which provided him with architectural experience. According to Leach, he worked his way from "gopher" to junior designer in the firm. He said as a junior designer he did some work on some of the stores in the Kansas City Crown Center. Because every building has structure, he said he is interested in structural engineering as it applies to architecture. Another of Leach's interests is music. He said that at a younger age, he had decided to go into architecture but that music is still one of his loves. He played oboe in the University of Nebraska Orchestra and performed with the Lincoln Symphony and the Omaha Opera Company. Leach said he is thinking about going on to graduate school and his long-range goal is to become crregistered architect. READ DAILY f P'. ATpl T;-1 .
