"Jonathan" is the work of 30-year-oid Hans Geissendorfer, a veteran, despite his age, of documentaries, feature films and television production work. It is a retelling of the Dracula story, having as a predecessor F.W. Murnau's "Nosferatu", the first picture based on Bran Stoker's novel. In the retelling, the story has lost none of the standard fixtures of the genre: rotting cadavers, buckets of blood, cackling villains and dismemberment all are in abundance, as well .is the standard bloodsucking routines. However, "Jonathan" raises .itself high above the vast majority of horror films by carrying its common enough premises to almost transcendent extremes. Geissendorfer has succeeded in creating a film that generates a genuine atmostpheric horror, perhaps more broodingly sinister than any film in recent times. As if to provide a counterpoint for this, the film is also cne of striking, vibrant beauty, with the two elements combining to form an excruciatingly effective film that lingers in the mind. "Jonathan" will be screened Friday and Saturday at 3, 7 and 9 p.m. Tickets are $1.25. Messiah' concert Sunday The UNL School of Music's annual Christmas presentation of "The Messiah" will be given Sunday afternoon in the University Coliseum. Eighteenth century German music giant George Frederick Handel composed "the Messiah" in 1741 and it has certainly become one of the most monumental and famous works tor orchestra and chorus of our time. The School of Music has been performing the piece every year since the turn of the century. The entire production is conducted by Earl Jenkins, of the School of Music, who also directs the Oratorio Choir. Soloists are Sara Ganz, soprano; Myong Sook Jo, alto; Douglas Jostad, tenor; and Vaught Fritts, bass. The University Symphony Orchestra is con ducted by Emanuel Wishnow and features George Ritchie at the organ. The performance is free and open to the public. It starts 3 p.m. this Sunday. Foreigners have blue Christmas By Lori Clepper Christmas can be a lonely time, especially for UNL's foreign students, most of whom will have to spend the three week vacation in Selleck Quad rangle. "We really have a hard time getting these students to tell us what they are planning," said Rowena Boykin, foreign student advisor. "They wait until the last minute because they keep hoping they'll get an invitation home from a roommate or a friend." . , , Boykin says' Selleck is a particularly dismal place to spend Christmas because there will be no phone service. no Tood service and a limited mail service. ' There will be some activities planned for the foreign students, including a tree-decorating party Dec. 22 and a party Dec. 28 or Dec. 29. "It's still a' terribly dead time, and really hind of depressing for the students," Boykin said. "If anyone wants. to take a foreign student home even for only a few days, thsy are more than welcome to talk to us about it," she said. The fcreign student office is located on the third floor of the Nebraska Union. r 'St. Nicolas7 Sunday at local church The first Lincoln performance of Benjamin Britten's choral work, "Saint Nicolas," will be held Sunday night at First Plymouth Congrega tional Church.
