spelling

Does it bring to mind masses of people, blindly
heading towards a large Roman-pillared structure,
in search of blood-shedding entertainment?
Interestingly, this seems to be the image that
was striven for in the structure of our own
University Coliseum, according to Nets Forde, a
UNL ancient history professor.
Forde, who recently made the comment to one
of his classes that coliseum is misspelled on the
campus arena because of it only having one 's',
explained in an interview that this seems to be an
American spelling adoption.
All foreign languages spell the word with a
double 's' he said, and the American spelling,
although considered by Forde an improper
spelling, can be justified by the fact that not only
the word but also the use of the arena itself has
been modernized.
"The Roman Colosseum was a place of life and
death battles, but here in America a coliseum is
simply a large auditorium used for large
gatherings," Forde said.
"What we really have here is a stadium being a
coliseum and a coliseum being a stadium," Forde
said. ' j
