Imperialism, not population, behind food crisis Editor's note: Kelly Nash is a former UNL student. He currently is a University employe. In a Daily Nebraskan guest opinion (Friday, Nov. 22), Chip Treen told readers that overpopulation is the cause of the current food crisis, and that this crisis cannot be solved without "harsh, cruel, inhumane and definitely imperialist action" by the United States. Such irresponsible and thoughtless arguments must be examined carefully. Take a look at present populations. India is crowded; Africa and Latin America are not. The U.S. is not crowded; the Motherlands and Japan are. Population has nothing to do with the food crisis. Imperialism does. Any sixth grader should know that the United States' six per cent of the world's population consumes over two-thirds of the world's resources. We live in the world's industrial center and extract raw materials from the "undeveloped" countries to main tain our standard of living. Our domination of the world's food market is much greater and more dangerous that Arab oil control. It gives .us the means to blackmail the developing countries for raw materials. "The only involves a Treen's guest opinion says, other answer to the problem massive redistribution of the world's wealth, so resources might be used more equally. This possibility is so far from reality, it need not be considered." Fortunately, the developing countries aren't falling for this; They know the developed countries are engaged in a massive redistribution of the world's wealth right now. The Third World bloc presented a strategy at the recent food conference held in Rome, which the United States conveniently ignored the issue of international agricul tural adjustment. That is, increasing food production in these countries, coupled with lowered tariff barriers and price adjustments. As expected, this strategy was ignored by the industrial nations because it would mean a cut in their profits. Instead, the developed nations point to population control as the solution. There are three reasons for this: The spectre of masses of poor people coming over the horizon for the goods they are due. Population control provides a convenient testing ground for new birth control products. In Puerto Rico, for example, over one-third of the women have been sterilized. In this country, pharmaceutical manufactur ers give welfare workers free birth control products which have yet to be proven safe. Women on welfare become their guinea pigs. Finally, the so-called population explo sion is a convenient and ambiguous scapegoat for the excesses of imperialism. The truth is closer to heme. can't believe I ate the whole thing!" Dear Editor, The editorial written by Amy Struthers ("Broadside," Daily Nebraskan, Nov. 22) is 100 per cent correct. It describes the American dating system as a childish game, which it is. And as; she pointed out, an artificial situation .often is ; created because of a lack of honesty and j sincerity between humans. One remedy suggested was to alter the rules of the "dating game,?' allowing girls to ask men out. Why not? But think about it: What is the man supposed to do to bring about such a change? Most guys agree that it would be a great compliment to be asked out by a girl.
