    $1 million cut
Continued from pg. 1
' 'The GSA is concerned that the cut will reflect a
reduction in the number of graduate assistants
that will be hired next year," Hill said. He
estimated that about 100 graduate assistantships
could possibly be eliminated.
Graduate assistant jobs must be renewed by the
university every year, Hill said, and they usually
are the first to bear the brunt of budget
reductions. "
illt is very unlikely that any faculty members
would be cut," he said.
Fewer graduate assistants
Richard Lonsdale, UNL Geography Dept.
chairman, said the only place his department
could cut costs is in the number of graduate
assistants it hires.
"When you are trying to maintain a quality
graduate assistant program, cuts really hurt," he
said.
Chairman of the UNL Chemistry Dept., Henry
Baumgarten, said although he has not been told to
cut back on graduate assistants, any such attempt
would be "a futile gesture."
To the extent that we have to cut back
graduate assistants, we will have to cut back
chemistry labs or increase the student-graduate
assistant ratio," he said.
