School hadn't prepared Gretchen
jmmler for a career, so she went looking
for adventure and found it. And an
occupation as well.
She's a potter.
"In school I was just taking pottery as
a class, not looking forward to a
career," Imlersaid. "When I got out of
school, I found I wasn't prepared-to
make a living and I panicked. So I went
looking for adventure."
She now has a studio in the
Haymarket Art Gallery where she
teaches pottery classes.
The Haymarket will show her work,
which includes about 200 items, Sunday
through Christmas. She'll show pit
chers, cups, teapots, bowls, planters,
vases, bottles and whistles.
After a short sojourn in Minnesota as
a camp counselor, she hitchhiked alone
to Alaska. She first worked as a typist,
then helped emotionally disturbed
children. Finally she got a job on a small
fishing boat.
She spent the summer fishing for
salmon and halibut in Cook Inlet and
living on the beach.

"7 he most exciting thing is that it was
directly connected with how I was going
to live. I was a food producer," Tmler
said.
"All the time I was going to school,"
she continued, "I was never thinking
about what's vital food, or a career. I
didn't know anything about anything.
School prepared me to go to school some
more, not any direct means of making a
living."
Now that she considers pottery as her
occupation she wants to learn auto
mobile mechanics.
'"Artists are the parasites of
society,'" she said, quoting "Old
Jules", by Marie Sandoz. "Nobody
needs to buy a pot, or a book."
Factories can make a good functional
pot, she said. "You don't need a
potter."
Imler is now living in Brownville,
making pots in her rented 19th century
house, which doesn't have modern
plumbing. A lean-to added on houses
her pottery workshop and a kiln.
Being without indoor plumbing leaves
her "in a continuous state of clay'
