The Council on Student Life (CSL) Thursday night
recommended that the UNL library system study the
possibility of starting policies designed to maximize
equality among university members when considering
fines and checking out books.
The recommendation was made by Judith-Anne
Sadler in the form of an amendment to an earlier
proposal by CSL member Chip Lowe. Lowe's
recommendation asked that the library look into the
possibility of stopping the payment of faculty and
nonacademic salaries if a library fine was not paid as a
means of achieving equality.
CSL member Steven Eggland said the Lowe proposal
was a "hostile kind of recommendation that might drive
a wedge between students and faculty and staff that
doesn't need to be driven."
Lowe countered that his proposal was "not meant to
drive a wedge in the faculty-student relationship, but
was merely trying to give the Chancellor (James
Zumberge) some concrete suggestions and to get ideas
out in the open."
The Sadler recommendation does not specify ways in
which library equality should be accomplished.
The recommendation was added to one already made
in the council's fees and fines report.
In other action, CSL approved a motion by Dave
Howlett asking that the chairman of each of the
council's four subcommittees appear at the next CSL
meeting (Dec. 4) to discuss the goals and purposes of
each subcommittee.
The motion also was amended to ask that ech
chairman deliver a progress report on the activities of
his respective subcommittee.
The motion provides that each of the four chairmen
appear weekly on a rotating basis to make a short report
to the council on the subcommittee's activities.
jCSL; 8. four-. subcommittees are the Housing Policy
Committee; Publications Board, Student Organization
and the University Program Facilities and Fee
Allocations Board.
Builder's Buzz Book
Price down, sales up
The Builder's Buzz Book has a new look, a new price
and about twice as many sales as last year, according to
Gary Miller, chairman of the Builder's Buzz Book
committee.
The Buzz Book, which has traditionally listed both
faculty and student addresses, is exclusively a student
directory this year, Miller said.
The price of the book, which formerly sold for fifty
cents, as lowered to 25 cents this year. According to
Mille the changes were made so the book would be of
greater service 1o the students who use it. He added
that if there was popular support for inclusion of the
faculty in next year's book, the list would be included
again in the 1975-76 Buzz Book.
Miller said that most complaints have been centered
around the inaccuracy of some Buzz Book listings. The
list is purchased from the administration, so the
Builder's committee has no control over mistakes in
addresses and phone numbers, he said.
Miller estimates that the total number of Buzz Books
sold has doubled that of last year, partially due to the
lower price and a step up in the promotional techniques
used Previously, the Buzz Cccks were sc!d through
representatives in residence halls, fraternities and
sororities, book stores and a booth in the Nebraska
Union. L . . .
This year, radio spots, a poster campaign and ads in
the Daily Nebraskan were used to let students know
about the availability of the student directory.
Buzz Books will be on sale in the book stores until the
end of second semester.
