Donald Dean, assistant principle for student services at Lincoln High School, said he thinks the declining birth rate will have a greater impact on the enrollment decline than a drop in the number of high school graduates continuing their education. In addition, Dean said a changing view of what society expects of high school graduates may be contributing to the projected decline. Opinions changing "Maybe society is saying not everybody needs to go to college to find satisfying work and a good living," Dean said. "Society used to say it was the thing to do (going to college), but is now more selective and realizes that there are a variety of ways to enter the job market." He said the reasons seniors give for not continuing their schooling vary. "Some say college just isn't for them. We have a lot of kids now who are honest with themselves, those, who, in the past, might have gone to college. Some are opting out because they don't see the need for it," Dean said. He said other students refuse to continue because of the expense of postsecondary schooling. And, he said some "simply don't have the talent. They couldn't compete in the college environment." Dean said a program in the city's schools emphasizing career education has made more students consider other ways to prepare for a job. He said the program, which is designed to make education more relevant to the student by teaching job skills, consists of work and shop classes, such as automobile mechanics. "We are not trying to help kids make the decision between going to work or to college. We say that everybody is going to work, but we recognize that everyone may choose different alternatives in prepar ing for work," Dean said.
