According to Jackson Harrell director of forensics at UNL, this year Kauf was ranked seventh amonq 100 speakers in a debate attne University of Kansas He was undefeated in prXinary debate and third-ranked in compet tion at St. Olaf's College in Minnesota. Kauf, who said he has a "big mouth and likes to use it," began debating in seventh grade. Currently he is a junior majoring in English. "Kauf is one of the most talented debaters I have worked with. We started to place him in senior class debates in his second freshman semester at UNL and that's highly unusual, Harrell said. 'Sports replacement' Kauf said his involvement in debate is like a replacement for participation in sports. He said he spends at least 20 hours a week doing debate work, and he will be attending debate tourna ments until March. "You have to work the tournaments into your schedule, but most professors are amenable to the fact that you may be gone for many of the classes," he said. This year the debate resolution is "Resolved: that the power of the presidency be significantly curtailed." As a debator, Kauf said he must be prepared to argue both for and against the resolution, and he must be able to come up with arguments and evidence to support what he says. Kauf estimates that he has 1 ,500 cards with quotes to be used as evidence. "Kauf has an excellent understanding of the debate process," Harrell said. "He can organize his ideas quickly and find opposing arguments." As-a-freshman7?aut ws the.. N ttlSt&sj In d i vid uaL Debate. Plans to enter law school Kauf attributes much of his success to his elementary and secondary education. He said he went to an elementary school that was a university lab experiment and a high school "with many options and good college preparation." He originally planned to attend another college, but come to UNL "at the last minute." Kauf said he likes UNL because of "a variance in the people that you don't see in other places." He plans to enter law school after completing undergraduate work. He said he has applied to and been accepted by the Harvard Law School, but is still unsure what school he will attend. doily ncrbroskon Editor-in-chief: Jane Owens. News Editor: Wes Alters.
