Students plan boycott to support farm workers
By Jim Sajevic
Boycotting grapes, lettuce and
wine may not interest everyone
but a group of UNL students
plan to make it their sole
responsibility.
The Lincoln Boycott Commit
tee, an organization sympathetic
.rtv United Farm Workers'
(UFW) attempts to improve
wages and working and living
conditions for its members, will
meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the
Women's Resource Center
Nebraska Union 116.
Only one week old, the group
is already discussing how to
organize a boycott of Gallo wine,
head lettuce and California table
grapes in Lincoln, committee
member Monti Usasz said.
According to Usasz, Lincoln
store owners will be asked to
support the boycott by voluntari
ly removing Gallo wine, head
lettuce and California table
grapes from their shelves in the
next two or three weeks.
Leaflets protesting the use of
'hese three products will be
distributed to customers outside
stores which do not support the
boycott, she said.
"We hope Lincoln stores will
support us, but we know from
experience that many stores
won't do anything unless their
sales are hurt," Usasz said.
Leaflets passed out
The total number of stores to
be contacted is not yet known,
according to Usasz. She said that
will depend on how many
members the Lincoln Boycott
Committee has. There were 15
people at last week's meeting.
Omaha Boycott Committee
representative Greg Herek said
leaflets are already being passed
out at some Omaha Hinky Dinky
stores.
The Lincoln Boycott Commit
tee is trying to build local
boycott support by establishing
Lincoln contacts, Usasz said.
But, local interest may be a
while in coming, she said.
"The boycott is a problem
most people know nothing
about, and it could take some
time before Lincoln organiza
tions can be convinced to back
us,"shesaid.
Usasz said the committee
must first convince organization
leaders to support the boycott,
then wait for these organizations
to meet and decide whether
they, as a group, want to back
the boycott.
Students 'very supportive'
Interested organizations will
be asked to donate verbal and
financial support to the Lincoln
Boycott Committee, she said.
Usasz said she has heard
about counter-advertising cam
paigns started by the Gallo
Corporation denouncing UFW
claims, but added that "the
boycott must really be hurting
them if they have to advertise
against us."
An important goal of the
Lincoln Boycott Committee is a
UNL campus boycott of Gallo
wines, Herek said.
"Students on campuses
across the country have been
very supportive of the boycott
and we hope Lincoln students
will be the same," he said.
Although Lincoln's response
to the boycott won't be known
for a while, UNL committee
member Sue Eisenhower said,.
"When consumers hear what
farm workers are fighting for
not just better wages, but basic
human rights they'll support
the boycott."
