Decision Thursday
Retailers in Union?
According to three UNL policymakers more
businesses in the Nebraska Union would benefit
students if the businesses provided a service.
A proposal calling for remodeling the southwest
corner of the Union for retailers will be formauy
acted on at Thursday's Union Board meeting. 1 he
Union Board, a 13-member student and faculty
advisory committee, has not yet negotiated witn
any businesses to rent Union space, Union
Director Allen Bennett said.
UNL Chancellor James Zumberge said, When
there is a service that students need, the Union
should provide it," but he said he was against
turning the Union intoa "shopping center.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Ken Bader
said more businesses should be allowed in the
Union only if they provide services at a cheaper
cost than what the Union could provide.
Citing the Gateway Bank as providing a service,
Bader and Regent Edward Schwartzkopf said they
thought students would patronize Union stores if
the businesses sold articles and services students
needed.
Some people however; have doubts about
bringing more businesses to the Union. ASUN
President Ron Clingenpeel, speaking at the Oct.
29 ASUN Senate meeting, said "bringing
businesses into the Union could jeopardize
(student) organizations contained in the areas
marked for business."
The Union Program Office, the Women s
Resource Center and the study lounge would be
affected by the proposal to bring more businesses
into the Union.
"If we eliminate meeting rooms for (student)
organizations, I hope we will profice other rooms
with better facilities," Schwartzkopf said.
"The only organizations affected are those on
the first floor and these can be moved somewhere
e'se in the Union," Bader said.
