Political observers wondering about
the effect of Watergate on the voting
public got their answer Tuesday night in
the form of widespread Democratic
gains in the national elections.
In the House alone, Democrats
appeared at 2 a.m. to have gained over
50 seats, giving them what may be a
veto-proof majority of 295 representa
tives. The number of Republicans in the
House was reduced to 140 out of the
total 435 representatives in the House.
A few of the Republican .victims
included men who had been staunch
backers of former President Richard
Nixon during the Watergate scandal.
Sen. Earl Landgreebe, (R. Ind.)
became the first Republican senatorial
candidate to lose in Indiana in 42 years. .
Right up to the day of Nixon's
resignation, Landgreebe had vigorously
defended the chief executive.
"Don't confuse rr.a with the facts,"
he commented during the judiciary
hearings." I've got a closed mind and
I'm going to stick with the President
even if both of us have to be taken out of
this building and be shot."
A member of the House Judiciary
Committee who was unseated Tuesday
night was Rep. Charles Sandman, (R.
New Jersey.)
Sandman, perhaps the most out
spoken Nixon defender on the commit
tee, commented on his defeat: "I tiidn t
think the Watergate thing would carry
so far. but it did and there wa3 nothing I
could do about It."
