Ancient urinals

Hinsdale to appreciate it."
So read the sign Friday at. the entrance to the men's
rest room in the basement of Architecture Hall. The
Hinsdale referred to was nhirsl two u jna!s
standing chest-high at one end of the restroom.
Hinsdale"Oliver" Hinsdale, according to archi
tecture students actually was the man who obtained
the patent on the urinals, according to Kyle Carey, an
architecture student. ' ,;
( Architecture students Friday held the fourth annual
"open house" in which visitors (male and female) were
allowed to come in and view the facilities.
Carey pointed out the unique features of the
Hinsdale urinal to visitors.
A steel pipe extends the length of each urinal, with
each pipe attached to a water box placed a foot above
the urinals, Carey said. Water runs through the pipes
at all times, providing continual flush, Carey said.
Carey said he and other architecture students had
traveled in Europe during a semester spent studying in
London and hand not found a urinal which could
compare with the Hinsdale's uniqueness.
Another unique feature about the Hinsdale is that
only two of its kind exist at UNL, according to Carey.
A Hinsdale used to be installed in every building on
campus, according to a Nov. 3, 1973, English Dept.
bulletin. These urinals were used "in the halcyon past,
when giants and generous men trod the earth,"
according to the bulletin.
Hinsdale was once a UNL faculty member, according
to the bulletin. A check with University Archivist
Joseph Svoboda, however, showed no faculty member
named Hinsdale between 1910-1925. Hindale received
the patent on the urinals in 1910.

as the Hinsdale urinals, according to Peter Black, an
architecture student. With a new Law Coliege to be
built on East Campus, and the present Law college to
be torn down, the days of these urinals are numbered,
Black said. Architecture students are starting a drive to
save these urinals, he said. '
