dream
This weekenc the Sheldon Art Gallery's
Shakespearean Film Series presents "Chimes at
Midnight", a 1967 film product, written and
directed by Orson Welles.
Welles made a brilliant film debut back in 1941
with "Citizen Kane", considered by some to be
the greatest movie of all time. Since then .this
mayfirick-nenius has shown alternate sians of
continuing greatness and frustrating disappoint
ment as a result of problems with the realization of
some of his projects.
"Chimes at Midnight" however, fulfills one of
his dreams, that of playing "Shakespeare's
Kalstaff. "Chimes" is a compilation of scenes
from "Henry IV," "Henry V" and "Richard II".
Showings areat 3, 7 and 9 p.m. this Friday and
Saturday in the Sheldon Auditorium.

Gropvies bargains
Review by Meg Greene.
Due to the avalanche of mail I've received in
response to my article on the Flamin' Groovies a few
weeks back, I see it is time to continue with the great
awakening.
The band originated around the San Francisco area
about five years ago. Unfortunately, the name of the
game was flower power and acid with the Jefferson
Airplane and the Grateful Dead the chief hawkers. The
group and their music were overlooked amidst the
quest for cosmic revelation.
Of the three albums the group produced (rumor has it
there's a small 78 rpm around), the one that seemed to
gain most recognition was "Teenage Head", co-engineered
by Randy Newman. ;
The sound the group puts out is a rather heavy
helping of 50s rock and roll with a lot of Detroit high
energy. And, of course, plenty of teenage grease. The
lyrics are rather trite, (I' m a monster T ve got a revved
up teenage head") and the music decidedly
unelaborate, the group combines enough style to make
the album entertaining, if not necessarily enlightening.
In case .anybody is interested in pursuing this
further, all these records of overlooked genius can be
found in the used andor cutout sections of record
shops. They're bargains, if nothing else.
