Legal services seminar Drunken driving " discussed I 'An By Randy Wright "Know your limit," was the advice Rich Jochem, law enforcement coordin ator for the Lincoln Alcohol Safety Action Project (LASAP) had for social drinkers Wednesday at the Student Legal Services Center (SLCS) seminar. "Anytime you hear ot an accident after 12 a.m., you can almost bet it's alcohol related, he said. Jochem, Jack Merrit of the Public Information Education Office at LASAP and Walter Giles, the alcohol program coordinator of the Lincoln Municipal Court, gave their presentation Wednes day afternoon in the Nebraska Union. Combat drinking problem Merrit - and other LASAP workers have been working with police to combat the drinking problem since the project began in 1971. Since that time, the number of Lincoln alcohol-related arrests has increased nearly 400 per cent, from 422 in 1971 to 1,635 In 1973, they said. The average blood-alcohol content of those persons, however, has decreased from 0.22 per cent to 0.178 per cent. A person is considered to be drunk, according to the law, when his blood-alcohol content is 0.10 percent. This decrease in alcohol content shows the success of the more vigor ously enforced drinking laws, Merrit said. Giles said for those arrested on a drunken driving charge, a plea of guilty and cooperation during the probationary period will make the sentence lighter. Probationary period This probationary period can include attending -ltd-to two tiours of driving classes' per vfeeV." group counseling, driving reltricirdns and' p'erhafis the use of Antabuse, a drug that induces headaches and nausea when mixed with alcohol in the drinker's svstem. Most of these methods are used only on the "problem drinkers," according to Giles. No trick methods such as patrol cars parked outside bars are used In Lincoln to catch drunken drivers but police helicopters are sometimes used over main streets on weekend nights, he said. David Rasmussen, the SLSC director, said the drinker should always have a friend along to drive if ha cannot, and he should know the name of a local attorney who can help him. y w Silas Arcade' Pinbafi Foosbail Race Gars m r rk fm i'" 'r.tfs r . v tit i i: fii.ni tOtBSSS aof wM CSS UHf Worn QffiSWsBW bbb Bring your own refreshments to all University Students 1217 O In the Glass Menagerie m K i Turkey Sale Support the UNL Poultry M Science Club.
