ROTCpro gram guarantees commission 'The Marines are the finest outfit in the world, and i want to be part of the finest," Jay Coons, a junior in the Marines ROTC program, said. Coons is one of nine men chosen to be a member of the Platoon Leader Candidates (PLC) program which guarantees them a commission when they graduate. . The program includes two six-week sessions at boot camp in Quantico, Va., during the summer months. Students are not required to take any military courses during the year. "It 'eaves me free during the year" Tim Evense.. a senior in the PLC program said. "No haircuts, no Inspections, no physical' training." 1 Law training Coons and Evensen both applied for the PLC program because of the law training they would receive through it. "With the law training I would receive, I could go right out and get a job," Evensen said. "That's more than you can say about a lot of other programs." Coons has since changed his mind and is going into aviation. The PLC program will enable him to be a Marine flight officer. "You have to really want it," Coons said. "Because otherwise that boot camp can be. hellish." To prepare the men for training, the Marines sometimes hold special runs or training sessions, Coons said. One of these occurred two weeks ago, when 12 men ran a 62-mile relay to Omaha to help publicize the 199th birthday of the Marine Corps. Keep in good shape "One of the main reasons we had that relay is to help prepare these men physically," Capt. David Evans, Marine officer instructor said. "Being in the Marines mean3 you have to be in good shape, and we try to keep the men that way. ' ' Being in top physical shape is a partial requirement for the PLC program. Men must also pass a military intelligence test with a high score. 1 ' Vni i havo tn Hp in shane to go throuoh the boot camp" Coons said. "They push you to your limit there." "A lot of kids that know me can t understand what I'm doing in the Marines,". Evensen said. "They have a preconceived idea of what a Marine officer is. But when I see officers that can make quick decisions, are mentally sharp and at 40 are in better physical shape than I am, I can only have great respect for the program." s , J t - i' , 4 . J 5 ?
