yule gifts
found in
catalogs
Just as you manage to vacuum up the last bit of
chaff from last New Year's Eve it is Christmas
again and time to start looking at this year's rush
of brochures and catalogues in search of the
perfect Christmas gift.
From time to time there appears a catalogue
that raises itself above the normal run of cheaply
printed, glorified product inventories. The
Neiman-Marcus book, which offers at least one
almost unthinkably, filthily extravagant gift
package each year is one of the better catalogs.
Another is the Catalog put out by The Guitar's
Friend, which operates out of Stockbridge,
Michigan. Their catalog is a languidly handlet
tered work, printed on recycled paper, which
offers a fair range of stringed instruments at
agreeable prices.

Its greatest attraction is the relaxed, conversa
tional prose style that is soothing to the mind. The
amateuristic misspellings and sometimes un
credible syntatic juggling, win hands down as the
friendliest style around.
My favorite is the Christmas catalogue
published by New York Metropolitan Museum of
Art. Offering what are possibly the most beautiful
Christmas cards in America, the catalogue has
grown slowly over the past few years into an
exquisitely printed, flat-bound volume. The
museum offers ancient jewelry, sculpture, calen
dars, books and reproductions of early American
glassware.
The greatest joys of the catalogue are its
illustrations, which cover almost every item listed.
The color is luminous, and the black-and-white
reproductions are printed clearly. All descriptions
are written in unadorned crystal-clear prose.
