Tassels was fbunded 50 years ago in response to "the
Cobs running around," Grice said. "Women felt
slighted, so Mortarboard (women's honorary society)
set us up." Corncobs was founded in 1920.
She said Mortarboard "let us go on our own" soon
after, and the spirit organization became instrumental
'in founding a National Pep Club in the early 30s. The
club later became known as Phi Sigma until it
disbanded in 1961.
The organization has gone through five uniform
changes from the days in 1924 when members wore red
skirts, white sweaters and hats to today's blazer outfit,
according to Grice.
In 1956, a year when most of the present members
were preparing to toddle off to nursery school, Tassels
was preparing to sponsor Homecoming events expected
to draw over 30,000 to see displays, according to a Nov.
2, 1956 Daily Nebraskan report.
Although the members involved in the activities are
less than those of that '50s heyday, Grice said that
Tassels continues to do "very, very well." She added
that the group plans to emphasize spirit for the minor
sports more this year, with increased attendance from
within the membership and the sponsoring of more
activities at the events.
A Big 8 season-opening pep rally for basketball is
being considered, as well as a card section for
basketball games, she said.
Tassels is funded mainly by balloon sales, according
to Grice, with additional revenue coming from the
Homecoming concert. She reported that nearly $500 is
made each game from the balloon sales.
