Humm passing propels Huskers over Jayhawks r.ame analysis bv Larrv Stunkel. Lawrence Kan. Casually walking off the field to the locker room, signing autographs and acknowledging wellwishers along the way, UNL quarterback Dave Humm exited after Saturday's 56-0 rout of Kansas very differently than he had exited the week before. After the Missouri game, trainers and doctors herded reporters away from the injured Humm. But Saturday, the 6 ft. 2 in. left-hander from Las Vegas was so swamped by the press after his recordbreaking performance that he was just getting into the shower when the majority of his teammates were boarding the bus. Dominating the afternoon, the Huskers outscored their hosts, limiting the potent Jayhawk offense to just 143 yards. The Kansans went without atirst down In the second half. v It was a surprising victory, considering Husker coach Tom Osborne said before the game the Jayhawks would be the Huskers' toughest opponents. The big story of the afternoon was Humm, who set three conference records, including: 15 consecutive pass completions, break ing the Big 8 record of 14 set (ironically) by David Jaynes of Kansas. Three touchdown passes to wingback Don Westbrook, which gave Humm 36 career touchdown passes. The previous conference record was held by Jaynes. (Westbrook also tied a UNL record, held by three other athletes, of three catches for touchdowns in one game.) oi. fnr 07 nasses for a .889 Dercentaae, breaking the old school and conference record set by Steve Runty last season against UCLA. "Better team with Humm" "We're definitely a better ball team with Humm out there," Osborne said. "He called plays at the line real well,-and changed some bad situations into good plays." Osborne himself raised some eyebrows when he sent Humm in for one play to break the record for consecutive completions. "Normally we don't worry about things like that," Osborne explained. "But Dave is a senior and may have never had another chance at the record." Humm had nothing but praise for his teammates after the game. "Everybody helped," he said. "We had some great catches and the offensive line blocked as well as always." J Laverne Smith, the nation's third leading rusher, was held to just 25 yards, which broke his five-game string of more than 100 yards rushing per game. Nebraska executed 87 plays to Kansas' 46, gained 465 yds. in total offense and scored 42 points in the second half . "When the offense keeps the ball, it makes it hard for the other team to score," Osborne said, "I told them it was important for us to score right away in the second half. They did, and the way they did it, (using 13 minutes of the third quarter), was equally important." Momentum the difference Osborne said the big difference in the Kansas game from the Missouri loss was mnmonti im "Missouri had things going for them last week," he said. "Today we had some bad breaks early, but the ball bounced our way in the second half when the game was decided." Probably no one in the stadium was as happy about the win as was defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. "We didn't make any mental mistakes today," Kiffin said. "We had the good effort we always have, and we had it for 60 minutes." . . ..... , Kiffin said he didn't think Robert Miller s absence from the game made a difference. Miller, KU's second leading rusher with more than 100 yards per game, was injured in the first quarter. ; "The game snowballed, especially after Kansas had to change their game plan," Kiffin continued. "We forced them to throw, and took away their big play." Two KU passes complete The Jayhawks did manage to stay in the game during the first quarter, completing two long passes to star receiver Emmet Edwards and stopping the Huskers on some crucial third down and short yardage situations. However, the spree started when Chuck Malito recovered a fumbled punt and the Huskers scored in five plays. Kiffin said the defense was in the same emotional state they were in last week. "We don't key them up each week, because we want to avoid an up and down type of feeling," Kiffin said. "We try to keep them at a constant level of emotion. ' ' UNL intramural coordinator: program off to fine start By Pete Wegman According to UNL intramural coordinator Gale Wiedow, intramurals are off to a fine start this year. Wiedow, who came to UNL this summer from the University of Northern Iowa, where he was a graduate assistant, credits the success of this fall's intramural season to two factors. , "I have ooms real good ssSiSisruS wcrtCiDy with me," he said, "and we haven't had a game postponed due to weather yet." Wiedow s only apparent problem is lack of -officials for minor sports such as intertube water basketball. He said that "few people know how to play them, much less referee. them."
