University Health Center

Dr. Paul Bancroft, UHC Ombudsman.
said he was asked to be UHC
ombudsman three years ago by Dr. Sam
Fuenning, then OHC director. Bancroft
worked as ombudsman for the Lancaster
County Medical Society and the Neb
raska State Medical Society for five
years before becoming UHC ombuds
man. , , . , .
One question frequently asked Is why
the UHC does not dispense free
contraceptives, he said.
Bancroft said coritraceptives are not
prescribed for medical reasons as well
as for the patient's emotional stability.
He said for some vicmen, contraceptives
may be injurious to their health.
Bancroft said about 50 per cent of the
complaints he hears are about fees
charged students for laboratory work
and tests.
He also hears complaints from
students having to wait to see a doctor,
despite having made an appointment.
He explained that doctors are often
called to handle an emergency case,
which sets thetn behind in their
schedule. UHC doctors are on a rotating
schedule for handling emergency cases
to eliminate appointment conflicts,
Bancroft said.
He also hears complaints stemming
from personality, dashes between pa
tient and doctor 'but in those cases he
can only advise the student to see a
different doctor, Bancroft said.
In addition to hearing complaints
from students, Bancroft also has
complaints referred to him by the
University ombudsman, the UHC direc
tor and the UHC Student Advisory
Board.
Bancroft said he does not know the
number of complainti he has handled in
his three years as ombudsman, but he
estimated that he reviews three or four
complaints a month.
