At least that's what Terry Micek, office manager of Studont Volunteer Services, thinks. . . ,, So far this semester, 76 students are giving of their time and talents to help meet the needs of others in community service projects. . . , Located in the Nebraska Union, the primary objective of Student Volunteer Services is "to promote student development," Micek said. This year's staff includes: Mary Dean, program - coordinator; Jody Schwindt, assistant program coordi nator; and three part-time student members, Sandy Bobb, Terry Micek and Del Myers. Volunteers interviewed Volunteers1 who come through the office are interviewed by one of the staff members. "Some students have definete ideas about where they want to do their volunteer work," Schwindt said. "In the interview, we try to establish their interests, personal and career goals and match them with where they want to go," she said. Areas in the community where student volunteers are needed vary, and are numerous. They include: youth and recreation, education, child care, elderly, mental retardation, mental health, physically handi capped, counseling, corrections and the Red Cross, Schwindt said. Student Volunteer Services is mainly a clearinghouse between the university and the community, Schwindt said. She said she thought the office was in a unique position because it is in the middle and can see problems develop and help bring about program innovations. Lack of visibility According to Schwindt, "the biggest problem this office has is lack of visibility on campus." In dealing with this, Student Volunteer Services is trying to establish a set of goals to better serve the university and the community. Some of these goals are communications, community services, education on the utilizaton of human resources, supportive services, student development and follow-up evaluation. Because of the tight economic situation, Dean said, more and more students are finding that, there is a . demand in the job market for people with experience. The records kept on the volunteers are valuable for job references, she said. The student volunteers offer a great community service, Dean said. But the most valuable result, she thinks, is "personal growth." doily ncbrosIcQfi Editor-in-Chief: Jane Owens. News Editor:'Wes Alters. Managing Editor: Dave Madsen.
