r " rtK!''fc''W-''-lS(- 4 W ." W J Kennedy attracts large audience in Omaha By Deb Gray with that group and I know just from personal I ' A myth came to Omaha Saturday. A member of a political dynasty came, hoping to elevate a political aspirant into significance. Sen. Edward Kennedy is grayer and heavier than suggested through photographs and TV appearances. The eyes are steely blue, but rimmed with red, probably from a schedule that brought him to Omaha early Saturday morning. At 8:00 a.m., he was addressing the student body at Creighton University. At 10:00 a.m. he left Omaha, Before the next day he would visit Sioux Cilty and Ames, Iowa. Scene one opened Saturday morning, before about 700 people at Creighton University. Dan Lynch took the rostrum. "You don't introduce a man like Ted Kennedy, you present him." Other people had trouble not only presenting Dan Lynch, but introducing him. Student body president Tom Grennan, introducing Lynch at Creighton. couldn't remember what office Lynch was seeking, until prompted he was running for the 2nd District seat in the House of Represenatives. Later, Kennedy said, "I know Dan Lynch, has been a county assessor and has worked with that group and I know just from personal oYnpriemce he does care about oeoole. ' ' Lynch has not been county assessor. He is a Douglas County board chairman and has been a member of that board since 1981 . Kennedy played to the mood of the audience. He told them he had considered attending Creighton, but since they didn't have a football team, he had decided to attend Harvard instead. At the Ranch Bowl, reporters squeezed elbow-to-abdomen around a booth. Bowlers continued, pins kept falling, 50 feet from the dining room'entrance. While others ate, Kennedy autographed napkins. Since all of the 835 people could not fit into one room, Kennedy and Lynch left to meet them. "You don't introduce a man like Ted Kennedy, you present him," Lynch said. After returning to the banquet table, Lynch again spoke. He said "tens of thousands of people" had met them at Creighton that morning. He again spoke the "There is no way to introduce Ted Kennedy" litany. Former Omaha mayor Eugene Leahy announced the auction of an autographed table napkin. . The napkin sold for $200 according to Rita Gross, office manager at Omaha's Demo cratic headquarters. i t f ' ml I, T T if . -t !
