Both Coyle and Eveland agreed that their lack of playing time last year because of Sanger's effectiveness had not hurt their confidence any. (Sanger kicked all field goals, all but one extra point and most kick offs in 73.) In fact, both emphasized that Sanger, who now coaches the kickers in practice, has helped their style considerably. "He's had so much experience," Coyle said. "He is real helpful and gives us good pointers. Believe it or not, he can kick soccer style. That helps me." "He really helped us a lot in workouts last year," added Eveland. "It's an advantage to us having him back." Husker coach Cletus Fischer also works with the kickers during practice. Nebraska's kickers fared well in the opening game against Oregon. Eveland connected on a 45-yard field goal against the wind, and Coyle converted on all seven of his PAT attempts. Accuracy and range are points emphasized in practice, along with distance. Preventing runbacks is a point also stressed when they work on kickoffs. "The kicking game will be the difference in any close contest," Eveland said. Compared to last year, this year's kicking game needs more depth and accuracy. An advantage is having two strong kickers available. The specializa tion of Eveland in distance ranges and Coyle in short kicks is also an added plus. Both Coyle and Eveland are young. They lack the experience and confidence that was possessed by veteran Sanger. Gaining that experience and confidence is a major goal of both players.
