" , I Coye, Evelandduo boosts kicking game By Becky Morgan With so many well-balanced teams representing the Big 8 this year, the scores are apt to be close. Single points become decisive. Field goals and extra points will be important game factors. In short, the role of the kicker, especially in the Big 8, has become pressure-packed and of prime importance. Living with that thought on their minds at all times is the Cornhusker kicking duo of junior Mike Coyle and sophomore Al Eveland. These two have combined their talents in replacing last year's versatile Rich Sanger. Eveland handles kickoffs and longer field goals. Coyle, more accurate at short range, kicks the closer field goals. He also does the extra point kicking. "Kicking can be the difference between winning and losing. In a major game, it's a big influence," Coyle said. "A good kicking game is a lot of things," Eveland added. "It's just as important defensively as offensively. Gook kickoffs and punts will force a team deep into its own territory. If they are forced to kick, you generally have good field position. Coyle is a soccer style kicker, whereas Eveland uses the conventional method. Neither player said they felt one way is more workable than the other. It was by acciuGnt that Coyls bGCsmG a soccer sty's kicker. "I was a freshman in high school," explained Coyle, "and trying out for placekicker. I went to make a conversion, and my foot slipped on the attempt. I came across the ball sideways, and it went straight through." See Kickers, Page 6. j. - & y . ' ? , ; I !
