Research center an $8 million investment While officials consider ways to increase the number of Nebraska veterinary students taking doctorate work at other schools, $8 million worth of construction is about to begin on the Animal Diagnostic and Research Center on East Campus, the assistant director of business and finance said Wednesday. ; . Ronald Wright said the center will consist of four buildings, one of which will be divided into four sections. He said a veterinary diagnostic laboratory will be the first building constructed. , Wright said the Sampson Construction Com pany of Lincoln will build the diagnostic lab. The company's bid was made Aug. 22 and approved Sept. 7. Working architectural drawings on the other three buildings will probably be bid in ate winter . or early spring, according to Wright. Wright said plans for the other three buildings will be approved by the University's Central Planning and Development Committee before they are passed on for the approval of Chancellor James Zumberge and the NU Board of Regents. f he plans then will be presented to the State Building Division and the governor for final approval before any contracts are let. ' Wright said the money was appropriated by the State Legislature last session on a cash-flow basis. He said this means the Legislature will distribute only the amount of money spent yearly on the construction. But Wright said the total $8 million is guaranteed for the construction. "inflation could cause the university to ask the Legislature for supplemental funding," Wright said. "Because of the set appropriation, the buildings can't cost any more than that without a new request for funds. "And with inflation, I don't think it will cost any less," he said. ' ' Oliver D. Grace, a Veterinary Science professor, . said the four buildings to be constructed are: A Basic Science Building which will include . classrooms and office space. An Animal Research Building containing four sections with space for research and physiological study of cattle, swine and domestic animals, a cattle disease research section and laboratories. A small holding barn. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. GO COMING SOON Senior Information Day Saturday , September 2 1 9 A.M. 1:00 P.M.
