"Our grandfathers tell us that the
trouble with the white people is that
they are eating their own grand
children," said Tom Cook, a Mohawk
Indian who visited Centennial College
Tuesday. "We are here to make sure
they are not going to eat our grand
children in the process."
Cook, whose Indian name is Kana
takeniate, is the associate editor of an
Indian newspaper, Akwesasne Notes. .
He identified himself as a "Nation
Man", who involves himself in the
activities of his nation.
In May, Cook was sentenced to two
years probation by the U.S. District
Court on charges of draft evasion.
On Sept. 10, Cook appeared in the
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals claiming
that his refusal to be inducted into the
armed forces was based on the
sovereignty of the Mohawk Nation as
well as the fact that he is a member and
resident of the Canadian-side Mohawks.
The Mohawk reservation on which
Cook lives spans the border between
the United States and Canada.
According to Cook, the three appeals
judges would not deal with the
sovereignty issue but instead concerned
themselves with technicalities of the
case. .
Cook said the American Indians are
concerned with developments that
seem to be bringing death to the native
American environment.
"The future well-being of the Amer
ican Indian is related to the fight we can
make against tnese aeveiopmenis," ne
said. . ...
The recent trails of American Indian
Movement (AIM) leaders are related to
the pattern of injustice concerning the
freedom of North American Indians,
Cook said.
"it is unfortunate that the government
of the United States people would
pursue an obvious course of harassment
of national Indian leadership," he said.
According to Cook, the first timea
group of white people listened to the
entire Indian story was at the Wounded
Knee trials of Russell Means and
Dennis Banks. ...
He explained that American citizens
were finally in a position to make
judgments on the Indian treaties and
the Indian people. '
"The American government is scared
to death of letting the American people
make a determination of United States
treatment of Indian people," he said.
Cook, besides being associate editor
of the Akwesasne Notes, is the
president of the American Indian Press
